W., Radio Research Station, Slough, Buckinghamshire. April 21, 1933, No. 11678. [Class 40 (v).] Relates to means for operating solely on the ground wave, to the exclusion of the reflected space - wave, when determining direction. Repeated impulses are transmitted for periods of one five-thousandth of a second separated by intervals sufficient to allow each signal and its reflected counterparts to be received before the arrival of the next signal-impulse. The critical minimum position can then be ascertained by observing the orientation point at which one impulse, i.e. that due to the direct wave is lost. Alternatively, the signals received by two frame aerials at right angles are applied to the control electrodes of a cathode-ray tube. The direct signal then produces a quasistationary " line " indication of the desired direction, the reflected signals being distinquished either as a stationary or variable, circular or elliptical pattern.
