[Class 40 (v)] A number of energy-absorbing conductors 3 ... 11, Fig. 1, arranged in the path of a short-wave beam transmitted from a station 1, 2, may be variably tuned, to give the beam a desired degree of convergence, divergence, or direction, or to modulate it. As shown in Fig. 2, the absorbing conductors 5 ... 9 include the anode-cathode path of a corresponding number of valves 12 ... 16 the internal impedance of which is controlled progressively (owing to the different biassing - voltages B12....B16) by a microphone 17 coupled in parallel with each valve. The valves may be coupled to each absorbing aerial through a transformer, instead of being connected directly in circuit, and the line of elements 3 .... 11, Fig. 1, may be inclined at an angle to the path of the beam instead of being at right-angles to it.
