Abstract
577,682. Air and gas heating furnaces. JENNINGS, H. W. K. (Petro-Chem Development Co.). May 2, 1944, No. 8273. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 2, 1944.] [Class 64 (i)] [Also in Groups III and XII] A vertical tubular furnace of the kind used in distillation or the cracking of hydrocarbons &c. comprises a combustion chamber enclosing a bank of inverted U-shaped tubes which provide a continuous passage and are disposed adjacent to the wall of the chamber with their bent upper ends extending across it, combustion gases being projected upwards around the tubes from a burner. The furnace consists of a cylindrical metal casing 15 having a refractory lining 16 and the top of which is closed by the flared lower end 17a of a flue; combustion gases are supplied from a burner 18. The inverted U-tubes 20 have their lower ends interconnected to form a continuous passage, their upper ends extending in parallel planes across the chamber. The fluid enters at 23 and is discharged at 24. In another form anannular manifold is provided which is divided by oppositely disposed partitions. into two separate compartments a baffle being provided in the inlet compartment to spread the flow. An economiser may be provided in the stack through which the fluid flows before passing into the tubes 20.
