[Class 123 (ii)] Waste heat thimble tube boilers or water heaters with an annular water space surrounding an annular or semiannular gas passage fitted with thimble tubes B into which passage the hot gases are introduced, and from which they are withdrawn from the top or sides, have a cleaning, spark-arresting, or dust-collecting chamber partway along or at the exit of the gas passage, with a steel access door F, the chamber forming a dry bottom end to the boiler. In the form shown a central exit flue D is made in sections fitted at the ends with spiders M, N, having co-axial bosses through which a bolt is secured. The sections can be removed from below or alternatively rotated in which case a hinged &c. panel gives access to the thimbles. In another form having side inlet and outlet gas passages a diametral division member, e.g. a hollow cylinder with side fins adjacent to plates secured to the tube plate provides a semi-annular passage and an up and down flow for the gases. The flared end E of the flue D and a perforated or wire mesh screen H assist in retaining sparks and solid particles in a chamber G.
