Abstract

Natural or synthetic rubber compositions are hardened by heating after the addition of a minor amount of a hydratable substance which is set by water added to, or present in the mix. The composition preferably is, but need not be vulcanized. Light magnesia is the preferred addition; heavy magnesia and "Neosyl MH" (Registered Trade Mark) also are specified. According to an example, a mix consisting of 1000 parts smoked sheet rubber, 1800 parts zinc oxide, 300 parts light calcined magnesia, 10 parts "Vulcafor" (Registered Trade Mark), 20 parts stearic acid, 10 parts "Reogen" (Registered Trade Mark) and 25 parts sulphur, vulcanized for 10 mins. at 60 lbs. steam pressure, had a Shore hardness of 57; the same mix to which 360 parts of water were added on the mill vulcanized for 9 mins. at 40 lbs. pressure, had a Shore hardness of 86.
