[Class 142 (iii)] A shuttle with an open top is provided at one or both sides with a series of inwardly directed blades or loops 20 extending diagonally so as to be pressed back by the cop 23 when inserted and to spring forwardly behind the cop as the yarn is used up. The shuttle is intended for use with cops having no centre or core and in looms having cop-changing mechanism, for example, as described in Specification 489,891. The blades or loops 20 may, as shown, be directed inwardly away from the eye end of the shuttle and the thread 24 taken directly from the base of the cop ; alternatively the thread may be led through the cop and the blades or loops arranged inwardly towards the eye end of the shuttle. The thread is tensioned by passing between sets of bristles 44. The cop-holding blades or loops may be in the form of flat-coiled springs mounted upon plates 21 or leaf springs of L-shape secured upon plates, or strips of rubber may have tongues or blades extending at an angle therefrom. A receptacle having a lateral slot for the weft-feeler of the cop-changing mechanism may be provided for the nose-end of the cop. The plates receiving the cop-engaging loops or blades may be shaped to conform to the shape of the cop, or as shown in Fig. 15, a hinged portion 40 of a plate may be pressed into contact with the nose-end of the cop by a spring 41.
