Abstract
574,949. Plate heat-exchangers. BELAIEFF, J. F., DELANEY, C. T., and GALLAY, Ltd. Nov. 18, 1943, No. 19279. [Class 64 (iii)] In heat-exchangers, such as radiators for high-speed aircraft, comprising thin-walled flat coolant tubes 8 which not only locate corrugated plates 10 but are supported and held in spaced relationship by corrugated plates 12 with separating plates 14, the latter plates 12, 14 forming a plurality of passages 13 for the cooling air, the heat transfer efficiency is increased by providing the plates 10, 12 with perforations 15 consisting of regularly arranged round holes of about 1/16 in. diameter and having a total area approximately one-quarter of that of the plates. Moreover, to secure an even flow through the tubes 8, one or more longitudinal baffles or partitions constituted, for example, by rods 16, located and soldered within one or more of the passages 11 formed by the corrugations of the plates 10, are provided. The plates 10, 12 may be made up from two or more smaller ones joined end to end by lengths of wire which are disposed across, and are soldered within, the ends of some of the abutting corrugations.
