578,523. Heat-exchange apparatus. CHURCHILL, J. A., BELAIEFF, J. F., DELANEY, C. T., and GALLAY, Ltd. Nov. 15, 1943, No. 18999. [Class 64 (iii)] Annular heat exchange apparatus, e.g., a radiator for an aircraft engine, comprises a plurality of passages for fluid to be cooled disposed in cylindrical formation about the axis of the apparatus, and one or more passages for cooling medium radiating from that axis and progressing axially of the apparatus. In one form, an annular radiator comprises two conical cowlings 21, 22 disposed one within the other with a common axis, annular header tanks 23, 24, 25, 26 on the cowlings 21, 22, and a cylindrical matrix 20 containing U-shaped passages 27, 28 which are arranged in nests, each nest lying radially and the nests being separated by radial gaps in which are disposed pairs of sheets of corrugated metal, forming the passages for the cooling air. The corrugations run parallel to the surfaces of the cowlings. The passages 27, 28 may be formed by corrugated plates in rhomboidal casings, or by U-shaped tubes nested within one another and passing through conical supporting gills which replace the corrugated sheets between the nests. The passages 27 in some of the nests, e.g., alternate nests or pairs of nests, open into the header tanks 25, 26, and the passages 28 in the intermediate nests open into the tanks 23, 24. Oil to be cooled may flow through the tanks 23, 24 and passages 28, and water through the tanks 25, 26 and passages 27. To enable liquid to pass to and from the headers 23, 24 without interference with the flow of air through the passage 58, a pair of passages arranged in positions similar to the nests of passages 27, 28 extend right through the headers 25, 26 at the rear, and at the front open one into each of the headers 23, 24. The headers at both ends may be divided diametrically. The two halves of each header at the front may be connected together so that the fluid can flow from one half to the other. In another form, there is a single annular header on each cowling, and these headers are connected by straight tubes across the conical air passage. In this passage are arranged a series of parallel frustoconical plates or gills through which the tubes pass. Radiators may be formed in two or more segments to facilitate assembly or removal.
