[Class 110 (iii)] Regulation of the quality of the gas supply to a combustion chamber Ch is effected by dilution with a gas of lower calorific value or air, or by adding a richer gas such as cokefurnace gas, acetylene, coal gas or the like. Fig. 1 shows a useful output turbine Tm and an auxiliary turbine Ta driving an air compressor C and a gas compressor G. A main gas supply conduit c and a second gas supply c<1> are controlled by simultaneously operating valves O, O<1>. Instead of the valves, two fans driven by motors whose speeds may be varied, may be used. One valve, or the speed of one fan, may be regulated. The compressors C. G, may be on separate shafts, and G may be driven by a separate turbine, whose speed may be varied. In this case, valves O, O<1> or fans are unnecessary. The gas compressor G may be driven by an electric motor supplied with current by a generator driven by the turbine Tm under rheostat control. Fig. 5 shows another arrangement in which the second gas is compressed in series by a fan V and a compressor G driven as shown, or otherwise. The motor M is supplied with current by a generator K. In a modified plant, the fan V and the compressor G supply separate nozzles in a common combustion chamber Ch.
