Abstract

The nickel salt of 3 : 5-dinitro-orthocresol and the copper salt of 2 : 4-dinitro-a -naphthol are prepared by treating an aqueous solution of the corresponding sodium salt with a soluble salt of the metal in question under conditions leading to the precipitation of the desired metal salt which is then separated. Specifications 192,830, [Class 2 (iii)], and 519,749 are referred to.ALSO:A preparation for the destruction of weeds comprises a monohydroxy-mono - or - di - nitro compound of the benzene or napthalene series in the form of a salt of a metal of the first periodic group, sub-group B, or of series 4 of the seventh and eighth periodic groups, or in the form of a salt of tin, lead, cadmium, molybdenum or thallium, in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent. The metals of the above groups referred to are copper, silver, gold, nickel and manganese. Suitable aromatic nitro hydroxy compounds are ortho-, meta-, and para - nitrophenol, 3 : 5 - dinitro - ortho - cresol, dinitro-cyclohexyl-phenols and 2 : 4-dinitro-x-napthol. The diluent may be a finely divided solid; or the salt may be finely dispersed in an aqueous medium, if desired with the addition of a wetting agent. Examples refer to aqueous dispersions of the nickel salt of 3:5-dinitro-orthocresol and the copper salt of 2\sw 4-dinitro-x-naphtol.
