Abstract

o-Aminodiphenyl-p1-sulphonic acid is prepared by treating o-nitrophenyl with a sulphonating agent, e.g. chlorsulphonic acid, and then reducing the nitro group, e.g. catalytically or by means of zinc and hydrochloric acid. 4-Amino-21-sulpho-41-methyldiphenylamine is prepared by condensing p-nitrochlorobenzene with p-toluidine in the presence of copper powder, sulphonating the resulting 4-nitro-41-methyldiphenylamine, e.g. with chlorsulphonic acid, and then reducing the nitro group. The above compounds are included in a list of sulphonated primary aromatic amines for use in the electrolytic production of azo dyes on fibrous materials (see Group XXXVI). Specification 334,827, [Class 40 (iii)], is referred to.
