Abstract
571,808. Electric induction heating. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 28, 1944, No. 1621. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1943. [Class 39 (iii)] The edge 2 of a slot in a metal plate 1, which it is desired to harden, is heated by an inductor 3 comprising a loop of copper tube through which water passes, and which is supplied with a high frequency current of 2,000,000-30,000,000 cycles per second, e.g., 5,000,000 cycles. The magnetic flux penetrates the metal and heats it only to a depth of about .001 inch, and when the current is cut off the heated layer is quenched by conduction to the colder metal behind it. The inductor is placed closely adjacent to the edge to be heated, and current may be applied for about 1/5 second. Any straight or curved edge or other surface may be similarly heated. Specifications 472,310 and 484,316 are referred to.
