Abstract

566,132. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 25, 1943, No. 10269. Convention date, June 29, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Groups II, VIII, XI and XXII] Anti-glow material, such as aluminium or aluminium oxide, is painted on to a strip of metal before the strip is shaped to form electrodes of a glow discharge device ; the inconvenience of painting the finished electrode is thereby avoided. The strip 11, Fig. 1, is drawn from roll 10 by motor driven rollers 13 and passed between applicator rollers 15, 16, the top roller 15 being rubber and the bottom roller 16 dipping into a bath of anti-glow material, such as aluminium paint. A narrow margin at each edge of the strip is left free from paint. The strip then passes over three electrodes 17, 18, 19 supplied with heating current from step-down transformer 26 so as to bake the paint. The electrodes may be artificially cooled. Finally, the strip is wound on to motor-driven roll 23. The strip is then punched to form electrodes, for example, of the shape shown in Fig. 3, and two such electrodes are washed and mounted in beehive fashion in the discharge envelope and fired in moist hydrogen to remove the binder.
