Abstract
563,080. Condensers. HUNT, Ltd., A. H., and GROUSE, R. A. Oct. 23, 1942, Nos. 14926 and 16674. [Class 37] [Also in Group II] 'An unmetallised strip is produced on a paper band fully metallised on one side by removing the metal by bringing the material into contact with and moving it past an electrified conductor, while maintaining the metallised area of the paper of an opposite polarity so that current passing burns off the metal along the desired strip. In one example, the conductor is in the form of a roller in contact with the unmetallised side, so,that a strip or strips are on one or both edge margins of the paper. If both edges are thus demetallised, the band may be slit centrally to form two strips of opposite hand suitable for forming a condenser on winding. In another example, the metallised paper band is of such a width as to comprise several unmetallised strips spaced parallel and several conductors may be applied simultaneously to the metallised surface to produce the strips. A machine for doing this is shown in Fig. 3, wherein a feed roll of metallised paper 41 is mounted on a spindle 40, the paper band passing with the metallised surface under and in contact with a roller 53 electrically earthed, over an adjustable roller 66 so positioned that a series of spaced electrified disc conductors 67 just touch the metal surface of the band to burn off the metal along the strips of contact. Thence the band passes under a series of disc knives 83 to sever it along the centres of the bared strips and also midway between them, to a roller 71 and thence to two collecting rolls 90, 91 on which the bands thus formed with a bared edge on right and left edges are separately rolled. The stock roll 41 and the collecting rolls 90, 91 are both frictionally mounted and driven so that the band is at a suitable tension throughout. Specifications 485,965, 503,851, [both in Group II], 558,686, 558,687, 558,688, and 563,084 are referred to.
