Abstract
557,461. Impact pulverizers. ELECTRIC STEEL FOUNDRY. May 18, 1942, No. 6707. Convention date, Dec. 9, 1941. [Class 59] In a rotary impact pulverizer of the kind comprising a driven shaft carrying discs to the periphery of which one or more hammers are pivoted, the hammers are provided with heads 18, Fig. 5, each having a recess with overhanging shoulders 22, 23 for the reception of the outer ends 26, 27 of a pair of shanks 24, 25 arranged in back-to-back relationship and the inner ends of which are provided with holes 34, 35 for the reception of a rod which also passes through holes in the discs mounted on the shaft of the pulverizer. The end 26 of the shank 24 has a concave portion which engages with a convex portion of the end 27 of the shank 25. When assembling the shanks and head, the head of the shank 24 is first inserted into the recess with its end beneath the shoulder 23 and then the head 27 of the shank 25 is inserted by giving the latter an angular movement from the position 33 shown in dotted lines to the vertical position. The shanks are held in position by a member 37 which engages with a recess formed at the bottom of the holes 34, 35. Figs. 7 and 8 show a modification in which the hammer head 51 is provided with a recess with overhanging shoulders 55, 56 and a central web 57 on each side of which the outer ends 59, 61 of the shanks 52, 53 engage, the ends 59, 61 being slotted to engage the web 57 and being provided with abutting convex and concave portions. The lower part of the recess may have a projection 88 as shown in Fig. 11, the outer ends of the shanks 82, 83 engaging with the recess being of similar contour. The hammer heads may have cutting edges.
