Abstract
557,059. Making rings. WELLWORTHY PISTON RINGS, Ltd., and HOWLETT, J. W. Dec. 22, 1942, No. 18175. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for cutting washers and piston and other rings from posts or other tubular members has a spindle carrying a number of axially spaced circular cutters and a parallel spindle or spindles supporting the work on headstocks fed by lead screw and nut driven through a double acting clutch device for effecting a high speed return and initial forward approach. The spindles are driven as described in Specification 557,057 and the work spindles have an outboard bearing as described in Specification 557,058. The pulley 60, Fig. 5, is driven as described in Specification 557,057 and drives through pick-off gears 62 a belt pulley 64 driving a drop lever worm 66 transmitting through gearing 73, 74 and 75 to drive a hollow lead screw 76 for one headstock passing the lead screw 77 for the other headstock adiustably coupled at 80 to the drive for the screw 76. The drop lever is pivoted at 67 and is sustained at 69 by a plunger linked to a hand and knock-off lever 70 operated by a dog 71 on the headstock. The shaft of the pulley 60 also carries a bevel wheel 82 meshing with a pair of bevel wheels 83 formed with clutch surfaces co-operating with a double faced friction clutch 86 splined in a shaft 85 coupled at 88 to the shaft 89. A spring 91 biases the clutch into neutral position and the rapid feeds are only operative when the clutch is held in by a hand lever 87. Dogs may be provided on the headstocks to act on levers linked to the lever 87 to prevent the headstocks from overrunning the slides at either end of the travel.
