Abstract
574,889. Reverse gearing. DARLING & SELLERS, Ltd., and CATTLEY, A. Dec. 9, 1943, No. 20573. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a lathe &c. having a fast power traverse for the saddle or like slide in addition to a slow power traverse and a hand traverse, the fast traverse operates through oppositely rotating clutches and the hand traverse is automatically disengaged when the fast traverse is engaged, the clutches and traversing gears being mounted in the apron of the saddle. The saddle 1 is traversed by a pinion (not shown) engaging a fixed rack, the pinion being driven by a gear K, secured to a hollow shaft H which is rotated, for the slow traverse, by a drop worm meshing with a worm-wheel J. Hand traverse is effected by a hand wheel W carrying an internally-toothed wheel V engaging teeth on a sleeve O carrying a gear O<1> driving the gear K through pinions M, N. Rapid traverse is derived from a bevel pinion D rotated by a gear-box (not shown), driving oppositelyrotating bevel gears E co-operating with clutches F. Either clutch may be expanded by a plunger G to drive the gear K and traverse the saddle in one direction or the other, both plungers coacting with cams on a rod' I axially slidable within the shaft H by a nut R acting thereon through a ball bearing S and screwing on a sleeve P fixed to the saddle 1. The nut R is rotated by a hand lever Z which also carries a plate T provided with cam grooves engaging plungers X contacting with the hand traversing gear V. When the lever Z is moved by hand in either direction from its neutral position to engage either of the clutches F, the plungers X are actuated by the grooves in the plate T to push the gear V out of mesh with the sleeve O, thus cutting out the hand traverse when the rapid traverse is engaged. In a modification, axial movement of the nut R rocks a yoked lever to displace the gear V and disengage the hand traverse and in a further modification, the hand wheel W is mounted in front of the lever Z on an axis parallel to that of the shaft H. Teeth on a portion of the periphery of the boss of lever Z mesh with teeth on a screwed sleeve rotatable in a fixed nut and carrying the ball bearing on the rod I so that rotation of the lever Z in one direction or the other will engage one of the clutches F, whilst cam grooves on the boss of the lever actuate pins to throw out a dog clutch connecting the hand wheel W to the traversing pinion meshing with the rack.
