Abstract
557,029. Coated steel strip. CARNEGIEILLINOIS STEEL CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1942, No. 13456. Convention date, June 22, 1942. [Class 41] An electrolytic coating, especially a tin coating formed on steel strip is brightened and bonded to the base metal by electrical resistance heating of the coated strip carried out during its passage through a chamber which is heated to provide an isothermal shield around the strip to prevent loss of heat therefrom, but to a temperature below that of the melting point of the coating. The strip, after passing over a power-driven roll 12, leaves chamber 7 through a gasketed orifice 8 and ascends a passageway 3 in a chamber 2, heated by spaced heating elements 5, leaving the chamber, after passing over an insulated roll 13, by a second passageway and entering a quenching vessel 9, containing oil and provided with a second power-driven roll, through a conduit 10. Heat losses from chamber 2 are prevented by insulation 6. The resistance heating of the strip is effected by current applied by brushes to the rolls 12 and is so regulated that the strip is heated to the melting point of the coating only immediately before the quenching operation.
