556,684. Synthetic rubber. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 3, 1942, No. 17212. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1941. [Class 2 (iii)] A butadiene-acrylic nitrile mixed polymer is swollen by means of a liquid such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, or ethylene dichloride, and the swollen mass is then treated with chlorine so that the greater part contains not more than 3 per cent. of chlorine, preferably under conditions such that the chlorine does not react with the swelling-agent. When the chlorination is effected on a swollen mass three products are formed, a white brittle outer layer with 45 per cent. chlorine, a non-rubbery brown portion with 22 per cent. chlorine, and the greater part is a rubbery product with 1.85 per cent. chlorine. Preferably the swollen mass is mixed or agitated during the chlorination, or the quantity of chlorine is controlled so as to obtain a maximum of the rubbery product or the chlorine may be supplied as a solution in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform or ethylenedichloride and the swollen material is employed in thin sheets which are agitated during the process.
