Abstract

556,432. Regenerated cellulose articles treating textiles &c. with liquids &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., GIVENS, J. H., and PROCTOR, J. March 31, 1942, No. 4263. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Gramophone needles are made of regenerated cellulose monofils, hardened with artificial resins. In an example, a regenerated cellulose monofil is swollen by steeping in water, and is then immersed in a solution of a formaldehydeurea condensation product for about 12 hours to ensure thorough impregnation. The impregnating solution may be obtained by mixing formaldehyde solution, urea, and ammonia solution, heating the mixture to 90‹C. for several minutes, diluting with cold water, and adjusting the hydrogen ion concentration to pH 4 by the addition of acetic acid. After the impregnation, the monofil is removed from the solution, dried at 40‹C., and stoved at 140‹C. to complete the hardening process. It is then cut into suitable lengths and one end of each is sharpened to a fine point.
