Abstract
546,977. Artificial filaments &c. ; casein. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and PENN, W. Feb. 6, 1941, No. 1578. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] Artificial filaments or fibres of animal or vegetable casein are hardened by treatment with a solution of a beryllium salt and with an aldehyde. Soluble basic salts of beryllium are preferred. Treatment with aldehyde may take place before, after, or at the same time as the treatment with a beryllium salt. The filaments or fibres may be subjected also to other hardening processes, e.g. to treatment with an aluminium salt with or without formaldehyde. In an example, beryllium sulphate is dissolved in water; formaldehyde is added, and then beryllium carbonate is stirred into the solution. When solution has taken place, a skein of casein fibres, already hardened with aluminium sulphate and formaldehyde, is immersed in the solution which is then heated for several hours at 75‹C. The skein is washed and dried. The fibre has a reduced wet extensibility and is less plastic in hot water than the untreated fibre.
