Abstract
Alkaline artificial albuminous fibres are hardened, freed from alkali by acid, washed, stretched, and further hardened by means chemically different from those employed in the first hardening operation, whereby their strength is improved. The first hardening treatment may be effected by aldehydes, e.g. formaldehyde vapour or quinones and the second by metal salts, e.g. a chromium salt solution, or vice versa. The hardening and stretching operations may be effected at different temperatures. In the examples: (1) slightly alkaline caseinate fibres are hardened with formaldehyde vapour, dipped in dilute acid, washed, stretched, submerged in a chrome alum bath containing calcined soda, washed and dried; (2) slightly alkaline casein fibres are hardened with dormaldehyde vapour, freed from alkali with dilute acid, washed, stretched during their travel through a water bath and a chrome bath, immersed for two days in a chrome bath, washed and dried.
