Abstract

556,142. Resinous condensation products. TRIGGS, W. W. (American Cyanamid Co.). May 21, 1941, No. 6527. [Class 2 (iii)] Resinous condensation products are prepared by reacting an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde with a mixture containing dicyandiamide and melamine in a molar ratio between 8:1 and 4:1, the reaction being carried out under alkaline conditions and by heating at about 50‹C. until there is formed a partially condensed non- hydrophobe stable product which becomes a creamy white mass on cooling to room temperature, and which readily liquefies when heated above 50‹C. The reaction is best conducted at a pH of between 8 and 9, and at a temperature of 50‹C. for 6 hours. Specified alkalies are sodium hydroxide and guanidine carbonate. Examples are given. The products may be used in the preparation of laminated materials, electrical insulators, adhesives and moulding powders, and in the treatment of textiles. Specification 549,705 is referred to.
