Abstract

In the production of resinous syrups by the condensation of dicyandiamide with an aldehyde, stabilization and regulation of the viscosity of the syrup is obtained by carrying out the condensation reaction in the presence of a hydrophilic sol obtained by the condensation of melamine with aldehydes. The sol is obtained by adding guanidine carbonate, ethanolamine, barium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide or like alkaline material to formalin until the pH of the solutions is adjusted between 6.0-6.5 and then adding melamine so that the ratio of formaldehyde to melamine is higher than 6 : 1, and then heating the mixture under reflux for at least 60 mins. In examples: (1) 0.22 parts of guanidine carbonate are added to 220 parts formaldehyde (37 per cent) to adjust the pH to 8.54. 31.5 parts melamine are then added and the mixture refluxed for 60 mins., the pH dropping to 6.4; (2) the sol obtained in (1) above is mixed with 8 parts guanidine carbonate and 64 parts dicyandiamide and the mixture refluxed for 2 hours at 65 DEG C. A syrup which is stable for several months is obtained. Starches, carbohydrates, proteins, e.g. casein, soya bean, may be added to the syrups.
