554,135. Automatic control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Mc- WHIRTER, E. M. S., DUNN, R. H., CHAMBERS, C. H., and WARDEN, F. W. Dec. 18, 1941, No. 16333. [Class 38 (iv)] (Also in Group XXXVI] In a means for indicating variations in an A.C. load regardless of variations in supply volts, and employing a transformer with a winding P in series with the load and a shunt winding S normally balanced, as in Specification 547,665, [Group XXXVI], the sense of the variation is indicated by means of a pair of valves V1, V2, the anodes of which are energized in phase with the A.C. supply to the load, whereas the grids are connected to opposite ends of the test winding T and normally biased so the anode current is zero. On load variation, one grid will be positive and the other negative, and one or other relay R1, R2 energized to give the indication or control the current in winding P or S to restore balance. The arrangement is applicable to constant-current control of electric arc furnaces.
