Abstract
<PICT:1066445/C6-C7/1> The location of a short circuit in a group of series-connected flowing mercury cathode brine cells C1 . . . C4 is indicated by employing contact voltmeters V1 . . . V4 in which the spindle of the needle is fitted with two coils of opposing torque, one coil b1 of which is connected across one or more but not all of the cells and the other coil b2 is connected across a section of a comparison resistor connected in parallel with the cells, the sum of the voltage drops in each section of the resistor being equal to the sum of the voltage drops in the cells, so that, after balancing adjustment of each section of the resistor under normal operating conditions so that each voltmeter needle indicates a zero position, any departure of the voltmeter needle from this position detects and indicates the location of the short circuit. Switches I1 . . . I4 allows short circuiting of each voltmeter when the corresponding cell is put out of circuit by a switch not shown.
