Abstract
552,989. Electric cables; cable joints; paper. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., and DUNSHEATH, P. Aug. 23, 1941, No. 10780. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] An electric cable or cable joint has built-up insulating material consisting of impregnated and helically-applied paper strips with thinned-down irregular edges formed of projecting fibres, said edges being produced by tearing a sheet of paper along a weakened line to fray out the fibres. The strip is applied with the edges of adjacent turns overlapping or abutting. In Figs. 1 and 2, a sheet of paper 1 is provided with spaced parallel cuts 2 on each side of the paper, the two sets of cuts being laterally offset ; and is then torn to produce portions 10, 11. In another form, spaced parallel cuts are produced on one side only of the sheet 1, while in a further form parallel line of small perforations are formed, and the paper then torn along such lines. The strips may also be produced by scoring and tearing a sheet by stretching it over a number of sharp continuous or serrated edges. In all methods, the paper may be moistened before tearing.
