Abstract

552,918. Ammunition projectiles. STARK, J. C. Nov. 25, 1940, No. 16853. [Class 9 (i)] An anti-aircraft or other projectile houses unequally sized shells which fit closely together to form a cylinder located centrally of the projectile, the centre or centres of gravity of one or more of the shells being. farther from the longitudinal axis of the projectile than the centre or centres of gravity of the other shell or shells. The six shells A<SP>1</SP> B<SP>1</SP> A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> ... are in the form of unequal segments superposed on each other. The time fuze b ignites a charge or cordite contained in chambers h', h<SP>11</SP> and an axial channel h<SP>111</SP>, whereupon (a) the cordite ignites fuzes I in the shells A', B<SP>1</SP>, .... which have been rotating with the projectile, are scattered, those shells having a centre of gravity near the axis of the projectile being projected with a relatively low tangential velocity, and those having a centre of gravity remote from the axis being projected with a relatively high tangential velocity. When the fuze l in a shell burns through to the charges of gunpowedr n, tetnyl o and T.N.T. p contained in the shell, the shell explodes. By varying the lengths of the fuzes l, the distances from the projectile burst to the shell bursts may be varied. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of segmental shell which comprises steel wire r wound into the form of a bobbin, the end sof the wire being anchored in the projectile base c, whereby, on explosion, an aerial net is formed.
