Abstract
473,805. Cartridges ; projectiles. FEDERAL LABORATORIES. Feb. 19, 1936, No. 28870. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1935. Divided out of 473,754. [Class 9 (i)] A round of ammunition for firing from a smooth bore gun comprises an ogival shaped projectile 10, Fig. 1, with expansible flight stabilizing vanes 14 longitudinally pivoted on the base of the projectile and capable of contracting sufficiently to enter the case 50 of the cartridge forming part of the round of ammunition, said cartridge having a flanged base 16 and being extended longitudinally to contain a propellent charge 54 as well as the vanes 14 and to have a substantial overlapping frictional engagement with the rear end 27 of the projectile. This rear end 27 is preceded by a shoulder 28, Fig. 3, and is spun into a groove 32 of a base block 12 after the projectile has been filled. A fuze 48 is fitted in the centre of the block 12, and the spindles 36 of the vanes 14 are also attached to this block. The vanes have a curved or angular cross-section and springs 42 are provided to swing the vanes out when the projectile leaves the gun. Bombs and projectiles with more or less similar tail vanes are described in Specifications 362,381, 375,517, and 376,216. The body of the projectile and its charge are as described in Specification 473,819 and the propellent cartridge as described in Specification 473,754.
