546,371. Enamelling and glazing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 24, 1941, No. 7941. Convention date, June 26, 1940. [Class 56] A crucible made of carbon-bonded silicon carbide is protected against oxidization by furnace gases by coating it with a vitreous layer comprising ground flint and an inorganic binder. The coating material comprises 40-60 parts by weight of ground flint, and 60-40 parts by weight of a mixture comprising glass or enamel with ball clay, borax, soda ash, and tin oxide. The preparation and composition of the enamel is described in the Specification. The coating material is milled and formed into a paste with water, and after it has been applied by any suitable means, the coated crucible is dried and is then fired at a temperature of 200‹-1050‹C. A coating of fused boric acid may be applied to the crucible before the protective coating.
