Pottery materials; enamelling, vitreous. - In the manufacture of pottery by a process in which the body and the glaze are fired at the same time in the glost oven, the composition of the body is adjusted so that it matures at the same temperature as the normal glaze. To adjust the body, fluxes are used as constituents of the mass. For example, in making tiles, a normal body material containing 20 parts of ball clay, 20 parts of china clay, 44 parts of flint, and 16 parts of stone is mixed in the grinding mill with 2“ per cent of a mixture of 1 part of calcium or magnesium borate and two parts of sodium silicate rich in silica. This flux may be added in the same proportion to a mixture of 36 parts of ball clay, 12 parts of china clay, 2 parts of flint, 31 parts of felspar, and 19 parts of stone, to make a body suitable for producing electric insulators and fittings by this process.
