Abstract

546,299. Wind musical instruments. STEVENS, A. H. (Selmer, Inc., H. & A.). Jan. 1, 1941, No. 33. [Class 88 (ii)] Valve-controlled' tone openings of wood-wind musical instruments and similarly controlled moisture-releasing openings of brass-wind instruments are formed or provided with a rim around or within which is disposed a yieldable annular member providing a seat for a valve 60 having a metallic or other rigid non-muffling face. As shown in Fig. 5, the yieldable member 40 comprises a main rigid portion 42, an outer layer 44 of thin soft leather and an inner layer 46 of paper, and the member 40 is secured in an annular recess formed between the rim 36 and an L-sectioned ring 34 secured to the rim. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 8 as applied to the upper octave vent, the yieldable member 58 is disposed within the rim 50 of a cup-like portion 56 of a tube 52 fitted within the opening 54 in the mouth pipe 16 of the instrument. The face of the valve may have an annular rib for engaging with the valve seat.
