Abstract
542,189. Electric motor control systems. BRITISH THOMSON -HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 13, 1940, No. 17626. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1939. [Class 38 (iii)] In a motor starting arrangement comprising sequentially operated contactors 16b, 17b, 18b operating to cut out steps of resistance 14 in the armature circuit, the contactors have separate magnetic cores linked by a common operating winding 19 into which a decaying current from a condenser 20 is fed, the cores being adjusted so that the contactors operate at different flux values. Starting is effected by a push-button 21 which establishes a charging circuit for condenser 20, the resistance 28 being short-circuited; coil 19 is energized and the contactors are opened. Contacts 29a, 29b are closed to energize winding 22 which closes contact 22c to complete the armature circuit through resistance 14. The circuit of coil 19 and the charging circuit of condenser 20 are interrupted at contacts 22b whereupon the condenser discharges through resistance 28 to produce a decaying energization of coil 19 which allows the contactors to close in succession to cut out resistance steps in the armature circuit. The necessary adjustment of the contactors is effected by using shims to provide different air gap settings, or by different settings of the closing springs 16c, 17c, 18c.
