Abstract
541,309. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. May 20, 1940, No. 8937. Convention date, July 8, 1939. [Class 8 {i)] The rotary agitator of a suction cleaner carries rigid beaters 3 mounted at an adjustable distance from the axis. The adjustment may be effected by a cam 12 on a transverse axis which moves the beater outwards against springs 8 attached to the bed in which the beater lies, and looped over studs on the beater. Alternatively the motor driving the agitator may have two alternative speeds, and according to these speeds the beater is projected outwards to different distances by the centrifugal force acting against the springs 8. The agitator may also carry brushes 21, Fig. 12, connected by links 25 to the beaters, and moving pivotally against coil springs 22 ; thus the beaters moving outwards under centrifugal force at one of the two speeds draw the brushes inwards. The springs 22 oppose 'the outward motion of the beaters; light leaf springs which assist the outward motion prevent chattering.
