Abstract
540,068. Photo-electric apparatus for measuring electromagnetic fields. STRAUSS, S. June 17, 1940, No. 10473. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An apparatus for measuring the local intensity of a high-frequency electromagnetic field, especially for electrotherapeutical purposes, comprises a luminous discharge device of small dimensions relatively to the field and adapted to be introduced in said field and be excited to luminescence in proportion to the local intensity of the field in combination with a photo-metric device for determining the intensity of the luminescence. As shown, a discharge device 1 consisting of an electrodeless bulb filled with gas at low pressure is arranged at one end of a light-tight tube 2 of electrically insulating material enclosing at its other end a photo-electric cell 3 to which light is directed by a glass tube 5 extending between the bulb and the cell. The cell 3 is connected to a measuring instrument 4 in shunt with a variable resistance 6 which can be set in accordance with the frequency of the field so that the reading of the measuring instrument may be correct for that field frequency.
