Abstract
320,070. Lindemann, F. A. July 3, 1928. Vacuum tubes.-Apparatus for recording or detecting variations in electric current strength, for example for recording sound vibrations, consists of a glow discharge lamp containing an anode 14, Fig. 1, and a narrow elongated cathode 12, a screen such as a film 21, Fig. 2, and projecting means such as a lens 20, which faces the cathode directly, and projects an image of the whole width of the glow upon the screen, with or without means for blocking out more or less of the length of the image. The cathode may consist of a wire of constant or varying diameter partly surrounded for the whole of its length by a glass shield 13; it may be polished to make the glow uniform. The anode, consisting of a wire or metal sheet, may be arranged, as shown, closer to the cathode at one end than the other. Variations in the current strength produce variations of the glowing length of the cathode without variations of the intensity of the glow; when the anode is mounted parallel with the cathode, variations in current produce variations in the intensity of luminosity of the cathode. The envelope is made of glass or fused silica transparent to visible and preferably also to ultra-violet rays. Specifications 206,908. 209,800 and 212,867 are referred to.
