Abstract

539,978. Air-raid shelters; huts. MUIRHEAD, J. T. Jan. 27, 1940, No. 1699. [Class 20 (i) ] A modification of the shelters described in Specifications 488,013 and 505,512 comprises the use of curved concrete sections ribbed on the insides or outsides and inter-spaced with non- ribbed arcuate sections, the sections being bolted together. As shown in Fig. 1, the alternate arcuate sections 1 are internally ribbed at 3 and the filling sections 4 are disposed so as to form flush outer surface, whereas, as shown in Fig. 2, the arcuate sections 1 are externally ribbed at 3 and the filler blocks 4 are disposed so as to form a flush inner surface. The ribs in each case are perforated to receive longitudinal tierods 9. The foot of each section is flanged at 5 to fit in foundation blocks 6 which are of such a length as to receive the ends of a spacer and filler block. Opposed foundation blocks are secured together by tie-rods 7 and a floor of bituminous blocks is laid between the foundation blocks. The joints between the blocks may be sealed with bitumen or other waterproofing composition. The ends of the structure are closed by means of walls of wood, brick and the like, protected by screens of metal wool sprayed with cement. Opaque or transparent division walls may be provided within the shelter. The shelter may be used as a garage, workshop, covering for a trench, army hut, or storage hut for food, ammunition and weapons.
