Abstract
539,875. Edge-runner mills. SMEDLEY BROS., Ltd., and SMEDLEY, D. A. May 16, 1940, No. 8731. [Class 59] An edge-runner mill for treating foundry sand has a pan and rollers the surfaces of which are provided with reticulated depressions. As shown, the pan 14, rotated by bevel gear, is provided with a surface plate having depressions 30 bounded by ridges 31, the rollers 17, 18 mounted on resiliently-supported fixed axles 19, 20 riding in vertical guides 21, being provided with similar surfaces. Rotary stirrers 35, 36, each comprising vertical teeth depending from a disc, are mounted at different distances from the central axis 12 and are driven at different rates. The material is fed centrally and deflected by a blade 34 so as to pass under the stirrer 35, and is finally discharged by a blade 47, a gate 48 hung on a horizontal pivot being provided to break up lumps. In a modification, a rotating drumlike bladed member may be provided for this purpose. The pan may be stationary and the rollers, with their shafts, rotated about the vertical axis 12.
