539,618. Heat-treating light metals and alloys. LOBLEY, A. G.. and BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd. Nov. 6, 1939, No. 29423. [Class 72] In the heat treatment of light metals or alloys, the heated metals &c. are quenched by delivering a fluid current such as air, to the work charge at the full pre-determined velocity immediately the quenching operation is commenced so that the full effect of the cooling is applied to the whole of the metal at the outset practically simultaneously and uniformly. The fluid current is produced by a fan having a controlling valve on its delivery side, the valve being opened when the fan is driven at a speed to give the predetermined velocity required. A spray of liquid may be delivered into the air current before it enters the chamber containing the metals &c. and the spray is ,controlled by a valve which is opened simultaneously, preferably electrically, with the air-controlling valve.
