Abstract

539,521. Drum presses. HOOLHORST, C. P. E.. March 12, 1940, No. 4627. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group I] In a press comprising eccentrically-arranged inner and outer rotary drums 1, 7, the space between the drums is divided into compartments by partitions 13 which move with the drums and are supported at both ends so that they can turn relatively to the drums. As shown the partitions have hinges in the drum 1 and bearings through which they can slide into recesses 14 in the drum 7. The drum 7 is supported and guided by rollers 10, 8, on a frame 9 and rotated by pinions on a shaft 6, the pinions engaging with toothed rims 11. The drum 1 is mounted on a shaft 2 which is driven by gear wheels 4, 5 from the shaft 6. The press chamber is closed at the top and bottom respectively by stationary plates 16, 17 and the material under treatment is supplied by a screw 15 through an opening in the upper plate. Outside the pressing zone the space between the drums is open at both top and bottom and the pressed material is discharged at the bottom on to a chute 24 either by hand or by a device driven from the shaft 6. When the press is for use in expressing liquid the operative surfaces of the drums have grooves 19 covered by perforated plates 18 and the expressed liquid passes from the grooves to a receptacle 21. It is stated that the partitions 13 may be formed of two halves telescopically jointed together and connected to the drums so that the partitions can pivot at both ends.
