[Class 31 (i)] Cylinder-knife skiving machines of the kind described in Specifications 278,769 and 318,290, [both in Class 31 (i)], have the work-supporting surface inclined upwardly and away from the operator's station, a detachable head carrying the driven pressure roll, so that an idle presser roll or a presser foot may be readily substituted, and a grinding wheel angularly movable about an axis parallel to that of the knife to bring the wheel into and out of operative position. From the operator's position on the right of Fig. 3 the work supporting surface slopes upwardly and is apertured for the projection of the knife 17 and the lower feed roll 129. This roll is driven by a shaft 149 and is carried by a member 189 rigid with a shaft 193 engaging an inclined bore in a yoke 157 pivoted on a shaft 159. The yoke is urged anti-clockwise by a spring 175, an eccentric stud 179 determining the normal position of the feed-roll, and the member 189 is urged upwardly about the shaft 193 by a spring 195. The roll may be changed after removing a screw retaining the shaft 193 in its bearing. A driven presser roll is secured to a shaft 265 mounted in bearings on a holder 253 pivoted at 255 to a member urged upwardly by a spring 245 to a limit determined by a stop 247. A screw stop 259 and spring 257 determine the angle of the axis 265. This mechanism is carried by a head 239 removably carried by the upper surface of the work support, and housing a shaft driven by skew gearing from a shaft in the base of the machine. The knife has an internal chip deflector 61, adjustably carried by a screwed stem 63 locked by a screw 65. A grinding wheel 67 for the knife is pivoted at 85 and swung to and from operative position by a screwed stem 103 having a head 105. The wheel is driven by a belt when the knife is to be ground. After grinding, the edge of the knife may be adjusted to its former plane by turning a sleeve carrying a pinion meshing with a rack on the knife carrier. A plate 293 is rigid with a rod 297 engaging a slot in the knife carrier to cover the gap which would otherwise exist behind the knife after adjustment.
