Abstract

539,020. Regulating. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd., and BIRABEN, H. E. May 23, 1940, No. 9109. [Class 7 (vi)] In an engine adapted for alternative operation on petrol or producer gas, the throttle valve for petrol operation is opened only after the throttle for producer gas is approximately fully open. Fig. 1 shows the accelerator pedal 1 connected at a to a floating lever 3, the end b of which is connected to the gas throttle 4, and the other end c to the petrol throttle 5. When the pedal is depressed from the position shown in full lines, the closing-spring 6 of the throttle 5 causes the end c of the lever 3 to act as a fulcrum about which the other end b moves to open the throttle 4 until it is held by a stop 8. The end b then acts as a fulcrum about which the end c moves to open the throttle 5. For starting on petrol, the throttle 4 may be held closed by a hand connection 10, 11. The idling position of the throttle 4 may be located by a stop 12 adjusted by turning a button 13. In a modification, the accelerator pedal is connected to a lever co-operating with lugs on two other levers mounted co-axially with the first and connected respectively to the two throttles. This form is also provided with a hand control for opening the gas throttle, and with a further hand control of an extra-air throttle.
