Abstract

537,820. Machinery guards. CHADWICK, A. R. Dec. 4, 1939, No. 31393. [Class 80 (iv)] Safety control devices for combing machines for the treatment of fibrous material, require the use of both hands of the operator to start from the front end or the gearing end of the machine, but the machine may be started from the coiler end by one hand, thus leaving the other hand free to piece-up the sliver in the usual way. A setting-on rod 10 slidable in guides 12a ... 12d is connected to the belt shifter 11 and carries a block 15 adapted to be held. when the machine is stopped, by a safety catch 16 pivoted to the table 13 of the machine. Parallel with the rod 10 is a locking-motion rod 14 an extension 19 of which has a cam slot 18 with which engages a finger 17 on the catch 16. The rods 10, 14 are provided with handles 21, 22 respectively. To start the machine from the gearing end, the handle 21 is first pushed to free the catch 16, after which the handle 22 is pushed to move the rod 10 and place the belt on the fast pulley 33. A weight 23 attached to a cord 24 passing over a pulley 25 returns the rod 14 when the machine is stopped. To permit the safety device to be operated by one hand from the coiler end, a pin 31 on the rod 10 engages with lost motion a slot 30 in a sleeve 26 provided with a handle 27. The sleeve has a projecting part 28 adapted to engage a collar 29 on the rod 14. The first part of the movement of the sleeve moves the rod 14 and releases the catch 16 after which the rod 10 is moved. When the machine is in motion, the usual cover over the gearing is locked by an element 11<1> secured to the belt shifter. The weight 23 may be replaced by a spring. The locking-motion rod 14 is retained in position during working of the machine by a catch 34, Figs. 1, 4, mounted on the comber table and engaging by one end 34' a shoulder 35<1> on a block 35 on the rod'14 the other end 34<11> being adapted to be engaged by a sleeve 36 on the rod 10. The setting-on rod 10 is restored to "off" position by a spring 37 which is attached to a collar 38 on a rod 39 which collar also engages a collar 40 on the rod 10 whereby the spring is charged when rod 10 is moved to start the machine. A catch 41 carried on a bracket 42 on the rod 10 engaged in a notch 39<1> in the rod 39 is tripped by contact of the knocking-off motion lever 43 to release the rod 39.
