Abstract
536,854. Time switches. ALKIN R. L., and CRANHAM D. R. March 12, 1940, No. 4594. [Class 38 (v)] In a switching device adapted to close a circuit for a pre-determined time, setting for the desired time is first effected by rotation of a shaft j, provided with knob and dial, through a predetermined angle, and a lever l is then rotated clockwise to turn a shaft k thereby moving a mercury switch mounted on the shaft into the " on" position and releasing the clockwork mechanism. In the form shown the shaft k carries a lever m n which carries an arm o normally engaging the fly p of the clockwork but moved away from it when the shaft k is rotated . The rotation also moves a pin m<1> so that it engages and is locked in a recess q' on a lever q, q<1> biassed by a spring s. After the pre-determined time has elapsed, an arm j' on the shaft j engages the arm q<1> and releases the lever m, n which returns to its original position operating the mercury switch " off." In a modification, the shaft j of the clockwork is held against rotation by a pawl lever engaging a ratchet wheel on the shaft.
