Abstract

536,642. Automatic guns. STEVENS, A. H. (Browning Co., J. M. & M. S.). Sept. 21, 1939, No. 26318. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to large calibre automatic guns of the long-recoil type as described in Specifications 226,197, 235,591, and 235,592, [all in Class 92 (ii)]. In the prior inventions, the gun barrel 6, barrel extension 7a, and lock frame 10 recoil together, the transversely-sliding breech block 9 being lowered by a lever 11 pivoted to the lock frame, one end of the lever engaging a slot in the breech block, and the other end moving in a groove in a cam 29 on the fixed casing. The recoil energy of the barrel imparts momentum to the lock frame which continues its rearward movement after the parts are unlocked, the lock-frame being subsequently held by a detent 26 when the barrel returns. According to the present invention, an accelerator 10c is pivoted at 10d on the barrel extension and has one arm engaging a projection 10i on the lock frame the other arm engaging near the end of recoil with a fixed cam surface lc to impart a rearward kick to the lock frame.
