Abstract

515,248. Automatic firearms. BIRKIGT, M. March 9, 1938, No. 7405. Convention date, Feb. 17, [Class 92 (ii)] An automatic firearm, particularly for aircraft, having a breech-block 6 and a firing-pin carrier 7, the breech-block having a pivoted latch 13 which either locks the breechblock to the casing in the closed position or couples the breech-block to the firing-pin carrier when the breech is open, has inclined surfaces 20, 16, 14<11> on the latch which co-operate, respectively, with similar inclined surfaces 21 on a fixed part of the gun, e.g., the casing and 17, 19" on the firing-pin carrier. During the forward movement of the breechblock, the surface 19" on the firing-pin carrier tends to urge the latch to disengaged position, which disengagement occurs just before the breech-block reaches closed position, the disengagement being made positive by the contact of the surfaces 20, 21. A surface 18 on the carrier maintains the latch in locked position during initial movement of the carrier. The firing-pin 10, Fig. 3, is acted on by a return spring 5, and is coupled by a crossbar 9 to slides 7 constituting the firing-pin carrier, the bar 9 passing through elongated slots 12 in the breech-block 6. Springs r located within slots in the slides 7 bear against stops b on the breech-block and tend to maintain the firing-pin in forward position. The breechblock may be operated by blow-back action of the cartridge or by a gas piston 25.
