Abstract

536,096. Explosives. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Hercules Powder Co.). Oct. 19, 1939, No. 28275. [Class 9 (ii)] Relates to the method of preparing progressive-burning smokeless powder in which the deterrent coating does not penetrate the grains when the powder is aged by storing. In the method described and claimed in Specification 528,035, the grains are surface coated with a deterrent comprising an admixture of a non- volatile, non-explosive organic material which is a non-solvent for nitrocellulose with a solvent for the nitrocellulose. According to the present invention, the grains are surfacecoated with a non-volatile, non-explosive, and substantially water-insoluble organic deterrent which is a non-solvent for nitrocellulose in the absence of any solvent for the nitrocellulose. The same or similar organic materials are used as those specified in the above-mentioned Specification.
