535,620. Silencers for gaseous currents. BLANCHARD, J. G. Oct. 13,1939, No. 27879. [Class 7 (ii)] Exhaust or other gaseous currents are silenced in aircraft or vehicles by being admitted to ridges or corrugations 1 extending substantially in the direction of the airstream and forced along the crests with a number of backwardly directed apertures 2. In the form shown, the exhaust from pipes 4 enters a chamber 5 formed with perforations 3 leading the' gases into the ridges 1. An air tube 6 may extend throughout the chamber 5. In modifications, the ridges are attached to the closed end of an exhaust pipe, or to each of the separate exhausts. of the cylinders of a radial engine, and in both cases the cross-section of the exhaust pipe may be reduced towards the closed end. The invention may be applied to the casing of the silencer described in Specification 521,395.
