Abstract
548,710. Silencers. BLANCHARD, J. G. April 18, 1941, No. 5061. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer for engine intake or exhaust or other gaseous currents may be constituted by inner and outer tubes 1, 3 forming an annular space which is divided into a series of longitudinal pockets 4, 5 by a folded or corrugated sheet 2, Figs. 1 and 5 ; or the sheet may be corrugated to form transverse pockets as in Fig. 7. The inner tube and the corrugated sheet may be perforated, and the pockets 5 or 14 may contain sound-absorbing material. The inner tube communicates at the farther end by slots 6 with the pockets 4, which are closed at that end at 9 but open at the front end to a space 8 which also communicates with the open ends of the pockets 5, so that, according to the position of a spherical or a butterfly valve 15, more or less of the gases are passed backwards through the pockets 4, and then forwards again through the pockets 5, to the outlet section comprising a cone 17 and outlet tube 18 communicating by holes 19 with a vacuum chamber 20. A second stage of pockets, through which the gases pass in the reverse manner, may be arranged in series with the first. A modified form of pockets may be obtained by the use of corrugated or coned discs 11 placed back-toback as shown at the left hand of Fig. 1, the pockets 14 being provided with sound-absorbing material. Other types of silencers may be arranged in series. Specification 475,877 is referred to.
