Abstract

460,234. Intake and exhaust silencers. VOKES, C. G. July 24, 1935, No. 21059. [Class 7 (ii)] An exhaust or intake silencer for internalcombustion engines, compressors, &c. is provided with opposing means for reflecting the sound waves backwards and forwards and comprising a pair of diaphragms backed by chambers of decreasing cross-section with their larger ends towards the diaphragms. In the Figure, the reflecting space is formed between a pair of diaphragms 9 behind which are the chambers 8 of decreasing cross-section communicating with the reflecting space by peripheral perforations 12 in the diaphragms. The whole is arranged in a casing 1 with dished ends 2 and apertures 4. Perforated tubes 10 are provided within the chambers 8. In the case of intake silencers, a pipe 3 is connected to the carburetter, so that sounds coming from the engine enter the reflecting space ; and filters 5 are arranged around the apertures 4 which serve for the inlet of air. For silencing exhaust gases, the pipe 3 is connected to the exhaust and the filters 5 are omitted. Pads of felt, asbestos, &c. may be provided on the end plates of the casing.
